Itinerary (may be subject to change)
Day 1: Arrival
After arriving in San Jose, you’ll receive your itinerary at your hotel, where your guide will meet you. Overnight in San Jose. No meals included today.
Day 2: San Jose to Tortuguero National Park
You and your guide will travel northeast through the Braulio Carillo National Park. After breakfast, you’ll board a river boat that will take you to the village of Tortuguero. There you’ll visit the Turtle Museum as well as explore the village. Overnight in Tortuguero. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3: Tortuguero National Park
A local nature guide will accompany you on a fantastic boat tour within this National Park. Deep into the canals you’ll travel. There you are likely to see exotic birds and wildlife, including, perhaps the endangered West Indian manatee. After lunch, take a two-mile stroll on a flat nature trail where you’ll have plenty of photo opportunities. Overnight in Tortuguero. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 4: Tortuguero to Turrialba volcano area
After breakfast another boat ride will take you to Guapiles where you’ll have land transport to the Turrialba volcano area. As you ascend the mountainous terrain, enjoy the unparalleled views of the Reventazon River Canyon and the Turrialba Volcano. The Lodge is in the heart of this voluptuous atmosphere, a private reserve and bird-watchers’ paradise! Overnight in Turrialba. Meals included: breakfast, lunch.
Day 5: Bird-watching in Turrialba Valley
Accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, enjoy an amazing birdwatching tour that takes you into the rainforest and also onto coffee and sugar cane plantations. Your afternoon is free so enjoy exploring the private reserve and photographing its many species of birds. Overnight in Turrialba. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 6: Turrialba to San Gerardo de Dota
After breakfast you’ll begin your trek to Cartago, a city with historic roots as the old capital of the country. From there you’ll make your way to the Cloud Forest of San Gerardo. At an elevation of 7,200 feet on the Talamanca mountain range, the terrain is home to birds unlike those you’ve previously encountered. At the centrally located Lodge, you’ll enjoy the buzz of colorful hummingbirds. Overnight in San Gerardo de Dota. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 7: On the trail of the Quetzal, birdwatching tour
A local guide will take you on a journey into the private reserve where you are likely to spot the exotic Quetzal. In the afternoon, you may choose an optional tour to the Savegre river and waterfalls. For an additional fee, you can go by horseback. Overnight in San Gerardo de Dota. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 8: San Gerardo de Dota – Uvita, Marino-Ballena National Park
Descending down the mountains, you’ll make your way to Marino-Ballena National Park, a bio-diverse wonderland. Your lodge is situated on a private reserve of rich rainforest land and Pacific Ocean vistas. Overnight in the Uvita area. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 9: Uvita, Marino Ballena National Park
A day to explore the hotel’s private reserve at your leisure or book an optional tour (cost not included). One popular excursion is the Humpback Whale Observation Tour by boat (best when the whales are migrating January through March and July through September). Overnight in the Uvita area. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 10: Uvita – Carara National Park area
A shuttle will take you today northwest on a beautiful route along the Pacific Coast, toward your final destination of Carara National Park, renowned as being the home for one of the most exceptional birds you will ever encounter: the Scarlet Macaw. These birds nest on the almond trees, affording ample opportunities so you can watch them up close. Overnight in the Carara area. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 11: Guided tour to Carara National Park
Today’s highlight is a walk on easy to explore trails in the Carara National Park, home to approximately 48% of Costa Rica’s various avian species. Within the nearby Tárcoles River live a rather ample supply of crocodiles who are not camera shy. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the Lodge. Overnight in the Carara area. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 12: Carara to San Jose
Explore the rainforest’s beauty one more time before you head back to San Jose where you’ll spend the night. You’ll have time in the afternoon to spare, so enjoy San Jose’s museums and cultural activities. Overnight in San Jose city. Meals included: breakfast.
Day 13: Departure
You’ll be transported to the International Airport. Please arrive at least 3 hours prior to your departure time. Meals included: breakfast.
